Minworth Battery Recycling Facility is located in Minworth, Sutton Coldfield and is Veolia's first UK battery recycling plant.

Opened in 2023, the site previously operated as a transfer station and chemical plant for over 50 years.

The plant recycles all battery types and chemistries - from small consumer batteries to large electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The plant has a shredder that processes 1.7 tonnes per hour of Lithium-ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) chemistry batteries with an annual capacity of up to 15,000 tonnes.

All EV Batteries are discharged and dismantled, the cells are then put through the shredder whilst the remaining valuable materials (aluminium, copper and steel) are removed to be recycled away from Minworth. There is no requirement to discharge portable Lithium-ion NMC batteries.  

The resulting non-flammable shred is then sent to our sister company, Euro Dieuze Industrie. This material contains precious metals such as nickel and cobalt. This is then transformed into metal salts for manufacturing new batteries.

With an estimated 350,000 tonnes of end-of-life EV batteries expected in the UK by 2040, this facility plays a vital role in establishing a circular economy for batteries.
