Mythbusters EV Rally: Team Lex Autolease

As headline sponsor of the EV Rally for another year, Lex Autolease is helping to challenge misconceptions about electric vehicles and demonstrate their real-world capabilities. Managing Director Nick Williams explains why the rally remains a powerful platform for building confidence in EVs and why practical experience is still the best way to turn sceptics

We are delighted that Lex Autolease is returning as the rally’s headline sponsor. What motivated you to return this year?

We’ve always seen the rally as a strong way of helping people make sense of electric vehicles by showing what they’re like in practice, not just talking about them in theory.

That still matters now, but the conversation has moved on. More businesses are actively looking at EVs, and the questions they’re asking are more specific. It’s less about whether they can work at all, and more about whether they can work for them.

That’s why we wanted to return. There’s still a need for open, honest discussion, and the rally gives people something concrete to react to. It helps move the conversation from assumption to understanding.

This year’s Mythbusters theme plays into that well. It gives us a chance to address some of the uncertainty that still exists and help people feel more confident in the decisions they’re making.

As longstanding participants of the Rally, how has it evolved since you first took part? Has the challenge of driving long distances in an EV got easier?

It’s changed a lot, and that reflects how quickly the market has developed.

A few years ago, one of the main questions was whether EVs could comfortably handle longer journeys. That’s much less of a concern now. The vehicles have improved, range has increased, charging is easier to access, and drivers are generally much more familiar with how it all works.

The other big shift is choice. There are now far more vehicles available across both cars and vans, which means businesses have more flexibility in finding something that suits their needs. That change in itself has made a big difference. We’re also seeing more diversity in the market as manufacturers expand their offer, which is giving customers more options than they had even a short time ago.

So yes, it has got easier. But more than that, it’s become relevant to a much wider group of businesses and drivers than it was when these conversations first began.

Looking back on previous rallies, what key lessons or experiences will help Team Lex this year?

One thing that’s really stood out from previous rallies, it’s that the challenge isn’t really the vehicles anymore, it’s understanding.

Early on, a lot of the focus was on proving that EVs could do the journey. That’s largely been done. What people want now is something a bit more practical. How does it fit into my business? What’s it like day to day?

We’ve found the most useful thing is simply showing it and talking about it openly.

When people can see the journeys, ask questions and hear directly from those doing it, it changes how they think about it.

The other thing we’ve learnt is that not everyone is starting from the same place. A fleet manager, a small business owner and a driver will all look at it differently. So, we’ve got to be better at listening and responding to what matters to each of them.

That’s a real focus for us this year. Not just taking part but making sure what comes out of it is genuinely useful for people making decisions.

This year’s rally theme is busting EV myths and misinformation. Is there a particular myth that you will be addressing on the rally?

There isn’t just one, and that’s part of the challenge.

What we see, because of the position we sit in across the market, is that different parts of the industry have different concerns. What a large fleet is thinking about might be quite different from what a smaller business or an individual driver is focused on.

That gives us a useful perspective. We’re speaking to manufacturers, dealers, fleets and customers all the time, and those conversations tend to highlight where there’s still uncertainty or where information hasn’t quite kept up.

The aim of the rally this year is to bring some of that into the open and explore it properly. Not to dismiss concerns, but to look at what’s happening today.

It’s about giving people a clearer picture so they can make decisions with confidence.

Can you tell us more about Team Lex this year? Who will be taking part, what vehicles will you be driving, and will you be doing anything different this year?

This year, we’re building on what’s worked well in the past, but taking it a step further.

We’ll of course have a strong group of colleagues involved. People who work closely with customers and understand the practical realities of running vehicles day to day. But we’re also looking to bring in different perspectives along the way.

Part of that is involving people who may still have questions or concerns about electric vehicles. If we can take them on the journey, and give them first-hand experience, there’s an opportunity for them to become advocates within their own networks.

In terms of vehicles, there’s a lot more we can show now. The range available, how they perform over longer distances, and how different types of vehicles support different use cases.

Vans are a good example. It’s an area that’s still developing, but there’s more choice coming through, and the rally gives us a good opportunity to see how those vehicles perform over the course of a full week.

You are hosting the finish line and wrap party again this year. Can you share any details of what teams can expect?

We’re really looking forward to how it all comes together at the end.

The finish is always a good opportunity to reflect on the journeys and the conversations that have come out of the week, and to share those with a wider audience.

Without giving too much away, it’ll be a setting that reflects how much interest there now is in this space, which feels quite fitting given how the conversation has moved on.

For us, it’s not just about marking the end of the rally, but about keeping the momentum going, continuing those conversations with a wider audience.

Finally, please tell us about any of Lex’s future plans.

Our focus is on helping customers move forward with confidence as the market continues to change.

We sit across a large part of the automotive ecosystem, working with manufacturers, dealers, fleets and customers, which gives us a broad view of how things are evolving.

A big part of that is making things simpler for customers. Customers don’t think in terms of products or channels, they’re looking for a straightforward, affordable way to get from A to B. Our role is to bring those different parts of the journey together in a way that works for them.

Technology is a big part of that. We’re continuing to develop how customers can manage their vehicles and access services more easily, building on the strength of our wider digital platforms.

At the same time, we remain very focused on supporting the transition to electric vehicles in a way that is commercially sustainable. That includes everything from maintaining strong relationships with manufacturers and partners, through to helping build confidence in the used vehicle market, which is critical for long-term affordability and adoption.

For us, it’s about keeping things simple, listening to what customers need, and helping them make progress in a way that works for their business.
